A Message from 2019 Charity of the Year, The Jon Egging Trust:
"I am delighted that the Jon Egging Trust has been chosen as Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials' charity of the year.
I founded the charity in 2012 in memory of my late husband and Red Arrows pilot Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging. Moving from RAF base to RAF base throughout his training Jon was struck by how deprived, rural and remote the areas around military bases often are. He was also acutely aware of the talent and resources existing within those bases. Jon wanted to do more to make the two worlds connect and to give young people from those areas opportunities to overcome adversity and be the best they can be.
Jon flew the Harrier from RAF Wittering and RAF Cottesmore for a number of years and we lived locally in Rutland.
When Jon died I decided to set up a charity that realised his dream of supporting and inspiring young people facing challenges in their lives.
The young people that the Jon Egging Trust works with are specially selected by their schools – many of them are at risk of dropping out of education or struggle significantly at school. The majority of these young people are having a difficult time at school, through no fault of their own. Some may be lacking in confidence, others may be missing out on good role models or may be the main carer of a parent with a disability.
For many of these young people they may feel there is a limit to what they can achieve. Jon Egging Trust sessions provide access to inspirational opportunities and role models, through partners such as the Red Arrows and other military and corporate partners, who open up a world of possibility to the young people.
We are so pleased to be able to bring the world of working with horses into this network of inspirational partnerships through Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and we are delighted to be able to involve some of the young people on our programmes with #what-it-takes to put on such a huge event.
