Horse care heroes
Two special horse care awards were presented at this morning’s Final Horse Inspection — both involved Artist, the ride of Monica Spencer (NZL).
The Spillers Horse Care prize for the best-cared-for-horse was judged by Bea Di Grazia and rewards the tireless work and dedication of some of the sport’s greatest unsung heroes — the grooms. Bea and her team of 'spotters' observe the grooms at work behind the scenes throughout the duration of Defender Burghley.
The winner, Michelle Koppin, who looks after Artist, received a relatively late call-up to the event.
“Monica teaches me on my horse and in return I help her out,” explained Michelle. “I was at her yard trying a horse when she asked me whether I’d like to come to Burghley — I said yes, absolutely!”
Michelle describes Artist as “a wonderful character who loves his quiet time — and carrots”.
Of her visit to Defender Burghley she added: “It’s an incredible experience to groom here. We are looked after so well and there’s nothing that’s not been thought of.”
Runner-up was Sarah Murray, who looks after A Class Cooley, the mount of Wills Oakden.
Artist’s connections made it a horse care double when the farrier responsible for shoeing him, Russel Deering Dip WCF, was announced as the recipient of the Worshipful Company of Farriers Best Shod Horse Award, judged by Jim Blurton AWCF. Russel made this back to back wins following his win in 2023 with Jennie Branningan's FE Lifestyle (also runner up this year!)
