The German-bred Holsteiner gelding by Verdi out of Electra III, by Connor, sealed the class with a rousing gallop in front of the potential to gallop judge, Yogi Breisner.

“He’s been super easy all the way through and is the kindest person,” said Piggy of the gelding who was bought as a two-year-old in Germany. “Thomas went off on one of his shopping trips and came back with him. He’s not done much at all apart from one qualifier.”

Piggy was particularly delighted for Quantum March’s joint-owner, Lady Gillian Aldous, who has been one of her staunchest supporters throughout her career.

“Gillian has always loved this competition, but has never won it,” she explained. “She does love a bay gelding, too. This win will mean the world to her.”

The duo finished on a total score of 84.5, just half a mark ahead of the five-year-old winner, Michael Jackson, who was denied a double when The Chosen One was relegated to second despite earning maximum marks for the final gallop. Emma Hyslop Webb and She’s A Lot took third on 81.
