A new star for former world champion Yasmin Ingham

And Yasmin, a seasoned campaigner at eventing's elite level, is relishing the cross-country and showjumping challenges that lie ahead in this year's Defender Burghley Horse Trials.

A score of 32.7 left them in fifth place after day one of dressage, and her attention now switches to designer Derek Di Grazia's cross-country challenge on Saturday, a potentially defining phase in the horse's five-star debut and a first Burghley for Yasmin.

"He is only 10, so he is completely inexperienced at this level, but I believe he is just an out and out cross-country and jumping horse with obviously so much so much more to come on the dressage. I believe in a few years' time he will be a real top contender," she said.

"To come into this huge atmosphere in the main arena is definitely quite daunting for a lot of horses, and he handled it like a pro. Most of the test was pretty on the button."

Although British star Yasmin, who won the world individual title in 2022, has never ridden at Burghley before, her first course walk told her everything she needed to know about what awaits this weekend.

Even at the age of just 29, though, she has never finished outside the top 12 in a five-star and has notched up two podium placings at Defender Kentucky, taking second spot in 2022 and third two years later.

"Burghley is renowned for its huge cross country course, so it was definitely an interesting first course walk. It was daunting, to say the least, and I am hoping it is going to get smaller and smaller the more I walk it.

"I love the way that Derek builds. I've ridden a few of his tracks now, and he just does a fantastic job. Burghley is just such an iconic venue, an event I've grown up watching. To now be here competing is pretty surreal."
