Magee and Treworra are ‘major players’
If consistency is one of the key ingredients for success then Katie Magee and Treworra arrive at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials as major players.
Their five-star record is impressive - four runs, four top-20 finishes - highlighting a burgeoning reputation that certainly makes the Co Durham-based rider one to watch.
Katie's partnership with Treworra, a striking 17.2hh dark bay gelding owned by Angela Hislop, has particularly flourished this year, with fifth at Badminton being accompanied by a fourth (Burnham Market), sixth (Burgham) and seventh (Hartpury). And when former European individual champion and Olympic team medallist Nicola Wilson is added to the equation as trainer and mentor, then it becomes quite a powerful mix.
"He looks every inch the sort of horse you would love to see at that level, and I am very lucky to get to ride him," Katie said. "I've had him since he was five, and he has always felt fantastic on cross-country. He is really improving all the time, and we have had some amazing days out with him."
Katie and Treworra were Burghley first-timers in 2025, finishing 20th, and she added: "It is a real privilege to ride somewhere like Burghley. It is a world-class venue and event, and it was like a dream come true jumping so many historic fences on the cross-country.
"To be honest, the results are always a huge bonus on top of everything else. We need to take every day as it comes and make sure he is feeling fantastic. I try not to think about it too much and just tick away at all the boxes and the things I can control."
Assisting Katie with that process is one of Great Britain's most successful eventers, who helped secure a team silver at London 2012 and won four European golds, including individual honours in Avenches, Switzerland five years ago.
"Nicola is brilliant. She will be at Burghley to help get us ready, and she is always on the end of a phone if I need someone to talk to," said Katie, the 2025 British Open champion with Treworra and Intermediate champion aboard Cushlas Indigo.
"She was the local rider that we all looked up to, and I trained with her whenever I could. Her experience and knowledge is huge, and I have been very lucky to benefit from that. It is amazing to have her support."
