Defender Burghley Horse Trials, which takes place from 1st – 4th September, has appointed the Household Cavalry Foundation as its official charity for the year.

The Household Cavalry Foundation is the official charity for the Household Cavalry. The Foundation provides charitable and pastoral welfare support to all the members of the Household Cavalry ‘family’ comprising serving soldiers, operational casualties, veterans and dependants. The Foundation also supports the Household Cavalry’s heritage, and, working with equine charities, its retired horses.

Defender Burghley Horse Trials Event Director, Martyn Johnson commented: “We are delighted to be supporting the important work undertaken by the Household Cavalry Foundation. The origins of Eventing evolved through the training of cavalry horses, meaning there are strong and long standing links between our sport and the work of the British Army’s cavalry regiments. In this Jubilee year, where the horses and soldiers of the Regiment will be at their ceremonial best, it seemed like a very appropriate time to be supporting the Foundation’s work.”

Giles Stibbe OBE, Director of the Household Cavalry Foundation, added: “We hope that our partnership with Defender Burghley Horse Trials will help us to raise awareness of the essential work the Foundation does, helping those who have served our country, both human and equine, in their time of need. The charity also works to ensure the history and heritage of the Regiment is preserved by our museums and archives.”

Anyone buying tickets to this year’s event will be able to make a contribution to the Foundation at the time of purchase; and during the event there will be a number of donation points around the show ground. Visitors to Defender Burghley 2022 will also have the opportunity to meet some of the Household Cavalry horses including the famous Cavalry Blacks, Trumpeters’ Greys and a Drum Horse.

The Princess Royal rode Doublet to victory at Burghley Horse Trials in 1971. Her Royal Highness is now Colonel of The Blues & Royals who with The Life Guards are the two regiments that form the Household Cavalry.
