Ros Canter lifts cross country award at Defender Burghley
The Avebury Trophy for the best ridden cross-country round at Defender Burghley 2024 was presented to Ros Canter for her classic, foot-perfect performance on Lordships Graffalo.
The award is presented by Rosemary and Mark Barlow in memory of their record three-time winning horse, Avebury, who triumphed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 with Andrew Nicholson.
It was judged this year by Yogi Breisner, himself a former competitor at Defender Burghley and British team manager.
“It was the round of the day, the perfect round,” he said. “Ros ticked every box in my list of criteria. I can’t imagine that we will ever see better.”
Yogi added that cross-country day at Defender Burghley had been a great occasion.
“We have seen some fantastic cross-country riding and a great competition. The course worked out beautifully, achieving exactly the right balance and the right result.”
He also highly commended three-horse rider Harry Meade, notably on Cavalier Crystal, and Tom Jackson (Capels Hollow Drift), plus, out of the clutch of first-timers to give a good account of themselves, the New Zealand rider Monica Spencer (Artist).
